Although countless people have driven past DTLA's Art District, as well as visiting Little Tokyo, not many have stopped to explore much more than that. In hopes of more people coming to the Arts District of LA, this one-story library is an attention-grabbing icon that emphasizes itself through the repetition of book stacks extending to the ceiling.
Carvings of ellipsoids into a rectilinear mass become non-conforming spaces that shape not only reading and lobby areas but also the pavilion that extends beyond the glass. With the book stacks becoming part of the pavilion, various light and shadow experiences throughout the day can become very special to people who visit. In addition, as carves provide interesting spaces that inter-connectedly flow, depth becomes a strength when the library can show off a striking facade that people on the sidewalks, in cars, and in other buildings surrounding it can all see.
